On Friday, May 8, 2009 at 20.00 pm, the Papatzikou Gallery in Veria inaugurates an exhibition of engravings by Manolis Giannadakis entitled, “time and memory – space and time”.
From the rich in morphologies and meanings, artistic work of M.G. a section is presented that thematically moves around a central axis of a critical look of the artist, for the mutations of the natural, the plant world, e.g. trees whose morphology mutates into something else, also elements from the technological field coexist and also collaborate in this mutation.
At the same time, works that visually refer to the design and the concept of the morphology of the hourglass are exhibited.
They are works of small form (10×15 cm) and medium scale (70×100 cm), worked with almost all the techniques of deep or concave engraving and with the technique of photo engraving on photopolymeric tin.
The art historian Thalia Stefanidou notes: Μ Manolis Giannadakis, engraving variations of time, gives us his engraving lines as “hieroglyphic seals” ώντας Painting the wrinkles of natural formations, as they acquire through their successive densities , encloses color humidity in limited paths… Earth and sky, foliage root and aura, geological notes and artistic lyrics, Giannadakis carves the neurons of memory by tracing paths and paths to the essence of nature and art.
Journalist Thanasis Gogadis also notes: … M.G. has not stopped until today to present the fragmentation but also the reconstruction of space, the relations of time and memory, space and time in general occupy him and he tries to capture them or to delimit them with personal, morphological elements.
Time this time is indicated through the hourglass whose shape is sometimes visible and sometimes not. Its choice is appropriate, since it includes the flow (the fluidity of things?) And the movement, but also the reversal, change, non-static. Very impressive are those hourglasses that mutate or transform into trees by reflecting or shaping the branches into root-wires and vice versa. The organic elements and symbols of the new age do not cease even when the hourglass is cut and only one part remains, as a zero circle.
The circles, the technological shapes, the dynamic lines remain in the unit that is being negotiated, the memory. Trees, leaves, ferns are the elements for a more “personal” deepening of the artist. The dynamics of color again has the leading role, as some unexpected combinations, pleasantly surprise. Let us not forget that color and design, in all the intertwined techniques and connections, were among the greatest achievements of M.G. The Artist knows very well that we all keep a lot of genetic elements from our old memories, trying to adapt to new environments, he comes to articulate and illustrate them, in his own personal way “.
Manolis Giannadakis has lived and worked since 1985 in Thessaloniki, he is an associate professor of engraving at the Department of Fine and Applied Arts of the School of Fine Arts of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki
The exhibition will last until May 30, 2009 and the opening hours of the Gallery are Tuesday, Thursday, Friday 17:00 – 21:00, Wednesday, Saturday 10:00 – 14:00 (and by appointment).
